OPS Road Sweeping Waste Treatment & Recycling
OPS Road Sweeping Waste Treatment & Recycling
Modular road sweeping waste recycling plants reducing costly disposal gate fees, treating road sweepings contaminated soil, gully waste, MRF Glass, MBT Fines and AD Grits to provide inert WRAP protocol compliant end of waste products
With over 10 years of experience in road sweepings recycling, OPS supply a range of modular road sweepings treatment solutions from small foot print mobile plant to complete turnkey facilities.
OPS designed and delivered a complete wash plant with advanced water treatment for Derby based 2ZLF from bare earth to a fully functioning recycling site in 12 months. The plant produces end of waste 2 CE marked products (fine aggregate and aggregate to BS-EN 13242 and 2 other products coarse glass for re-smelting and fine glass for filtration media.
OPS can design a bespoke plant to recycle: Contaminated Soil, Gully Waste, Road Sweepings, MRF Glass, MBT Fines, AD Grits.

Plant Specification Options
The composition of road sweepings varies significantly from site to site and from season to season. The flow chart above shows the percentage range composition for each component within the material.
Like the Oily Sand treatment plant, the OPS Road Sweepings recycling plant is made up of our own proprietary technology, 3rd party technology when required and off the shelf items. We have the flexibility to meet the customer’s exact requirements. We can upgrade a plant or to create a plant from bare earth.

Energy Efficiency = Reduced Wear.
Road sweeping waste is not inherently a hazardous waste, however, in some cases, it is nearly inert. Therefore, to deliver an environmental benefit (rather than just ticking a legislative box) a recycling plant has to be energy efficient. OPS design our plants with the following features:
- Zero ’90-degree’ elbows on pipes transporting sand and water.
- Zero ’90-degree’ elbows at the outlet of pumps.
- Recirculation pump controlled by flowmeters and a pressure sensor to reduce energy consumption.
- Accurate control of sludge flowrate to ensure smooth and efficient centrifuge operation.
- To strive to be water neutral by capturing, treating and reusing all the water which comes into a site.
Whilst the above items don’t save much cost individually together they save many hours downtime, energy and raw material costs – on a 30k tonne per year plant a company can expect to save £2-£3 per tonne.
Gully waste tends to much finer than road sweepings, containing less stone ad trash / organics. The materials tend to be dirtier with more fine material holding most of these contaminants.
An effective gully waste treatment plant also needs to consider effective water treatment due to the build-up of oil in the water and carry over onto the sand.
The preferred technology for gully waste recycling is using a simple spilt dewatering deck with oversize dewatered on one side of the deck and sand dewatered on the other side of the fraction.
OPS also can introduce the AEV into the equation which will further clean the sand particles to secure the inert label under the WRAP protocol.
The water is treated using electrocoagulation which rips the oil out which is then floated off using a DAF. A gully waste treatment plant should be hugely water positive so effective treatment will also enable cheap water disposal.

As engineering systems integrators, we combine cost efficient 'off the shelf' products with our high throughput proprietary processes. Integrated by best in class process control into a single solution individually engineered to site conditions, OPS deliver consistent performance, reliability and optimised life cycle costs.
