Oil Contaminated Sand Cleaning
Multi-process oil contaminated sand treatment plant with high pressure scrubber, wastewater and fines treatment processes for energy efficient oily sand remediation and on land oil spill clean-up.
OPS have been cleaning oil contaminated sand since the company was incorporated over 10 years off the back of a successful oil spill clean up in Ystad, Sweden for the Swedish Government. Fully scalable, our treatment plants deliver 120t+ per hr oil contaminated sand. The technology has been greatly improved since, but the core principles remain the same:
- Use as little chemistry and heat as possible
- Use the OPS high pressure scrubber (AEV)
- Remove oil throughout the process
- Clean the sand
- Clean the fines
- Recombine to give a soil

Oliy sand remediation requires multiple process working in concert to be successful. If one of these processes is not working, then the overall cleaning process will not work. The basic processes include:
- Pretreatment & screening
- Slurrification
- Sand Scrubbing
- Sand oil water separation
- Slops oil collection and treatment
- Fines treatment
- Water treatment
When the oil is aged by time and the sun then supplementary methods are required such as treating with viscosity modifying chemistry and by adding limited heat. These can also be used to get lower than the normal specification of 0.4-0.5% oil on sand.
The OPS technology is scalable to that of inert wash plant which run at 100t+ per hr.

The OPS electrocoagulation system not only removes oil, grease and particles, importantly it also stops anaerobic odour generating processes completely, making it the perfect pre-treatment step for reverse osmosis, reducing effluent rates from 20% to as low as 5%.

As engineering systems integrators, we combine cost efficient 'off the shelf' products with our high throughput proprietary processes. Integrated by best in class process control into a single solution individually engineered to site conditions, OPS deliver consistent performance, reliability and optimised life cycle costs.
